Acer Iconia TAB B1 - A71-83170501nk - Another Low Cost 7-inch Android from a Well Known OEM

One upon a time, low cost 7-inch Android tablets was the domain of second and third tier manufacturers. This is not the case any more. Hot on the heels of the Asus Memo Pad ME172V is the  the Acer Iconia TAB B1. Priced at Php7,200, Acer clearly wants a share of the tablet market, and is willing to compete with  all comers.

The Acer Iconia TAB B1 is a 7-inch Android tablet with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, installed out of the box. It has a decent  WSVGA (1024x600) display. It is powered by a
1.2 GHz dual core processor on a MediaTek MTK 8317/T chipset. This is backed up 512MB of RAM. This tablet comes with an impressive 16 GB of storage, expandable via a microSD card slot.

The Acer Iconia TAB B1 has a single front facing  0.3MP camera which can shoot 720p HD video. Wireless connectivity is via WiFi and Bluetooth, and this tablet does have GPS, something you don't see in many low cost tablets. The battery is a smaller than usual 2710 mAh unit, and that is the weakest point of the package, but at Php7,200, I am not complaining.

Is it a better choice the Asus Memo Pad ME172V? Not necessarily, they both have their pros and cons. But I will take that up another day. The Acer Iconia TAB B1 is a another ground breaking offering, which deserves some time in the spotlight all on its own.
